Joanna Arnow is an American filmmaker and actress best known for directing and starring in the 2023 film The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed.[2]
Early life and education[edit]
Arnow was raised in Brooklyn and studied film at Wesleyan University.[3] She is Jewish.
Career[edit]
In 2013, Arnow released her Berlinale Talents project, i hate myself, a documentary about her relationship with spoken word performer James Kepple.[4] When the documentary screened at the Anthology Film Archives in 2017, Richard Brody of The New Yorker described the documentary as "memorably painful" but criticized Arnow for not considering the implications of her project.[5][6]
Arnow's 2015 short film Bad at Dancing premiered at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival, where it was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Short Film. The short caught the attention of filmmakers including Andrew Bujalski and Sean Baker; the latter went on to executive produce Arnow's 2023 feature debut, The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed.[3]
In 2019, Arnow's short film Laying Out screened at New York Film Festival and the Chicago Underground Film Festival.[7]
The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed premiered in the Directors' Fortnight at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The film was released theatrically in the United States in 2024.[8]
While working as a freelance filmmaker, Arnow held a day job at a pharmaceutical company, a position she left as of 2023 to pursue film full-time.[3]
